We met in the fourth grade and have been best friends ever since. People often ask us if we're sisters because they think we look alike-but no, we're not. We decided to start this blog as our own little life project so to speak. We both love to cook and have a passion for sharing our crazy-fun experiences living in Alaska. Plus it really makes us get out there and do things! We often say things like...we really should go climb a glacier this weekend...for the blog :)
I'm Patti Massey and I was born in California but grown in Fairbanks, Alaska. My grandfather moved to Alaska and homesteaded in Fairbanks before I was born. So I guess you could say I have that adventurous gene in my blood. I now live in Palmer with my husband, whom I met when he was stationed in Fairbanks with the military. We've lived all over the US and even Germany during his career serving our country. Coming full circle, we finally moved back to Alaska about 8 years ago. His passion is fishing, so our freezers are always well stocked with salmon, halibut, shrimp, cod, etc. He's also an avid hunter, so between that and my love of cooking and gardening, we have enjoyed the bounty of what Alaska has to offer. So much so, I decided to go to back to school - culinary school - to sharpen my cooking skills. I am about to graduate with a degree in culinary arts from University of Alaska Anchorage this spring. I am actually out of our beautiful state temporarily, finishing my last semester in of all places, Florence, Italy! I'm focusing on Italian regional cooking and learning about the Slow Food movement. I can't wait to get home and incorporate what I am learning here in Italy with local Alaskan game and produce!
I'm Audrey Ranstead and I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm part Inupiat Eskimo and Athabascan Indian. Growing up, I actually spent all my summers in Nome, living with my grandma, aunt and uncles where I was exposed to my rich native culture and family traditions. Camping, fishing, picking blueberries, collecting beach glass and playing under the midnight sun are memories that I will cherish forever and made me who I am today. In 1993, I graduated from UAF with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit and an adventurous attitude. I currently own a bagel shop and a company called Alaska Pet Gear. I have two very spoiled kids, Roxy, a Cocker Spaniel and Salty, a Terrier mix mutt. I love Alaska and the adventures it has to offer, but I also like to travel all over the world. Sailing the British Virgin Islands is my new favorite "wintertime" hobby!
This is a photograph of my great, great grandmother, Selactuna, taken in Nome, Alaska in 1903. It's in the Library of Congress (among other places) and was featured in National Geographic magazine in the 1970's. I'm named after her-my Eskimo name is Selactuna.
You lady's are amazing. Keep up the good work.
